P0507 Idle Air Control System RPM Higher Than Expected
The engine is idling faster than the computer is commanding.
Common causes
- Vacuum leak
- Dirty throttle body
- Faulty idle air control valve or electronic throttle
- Throttle needs a relearn after cleaning or battery work
Symptoms
- High idle
- Sometimes surging idle
Can I drive with it?
Usually safe to drive, but a high idle can make the car creep harder at stops.
Tip: Look for a vacuum leak first – listen for hissing around the intake with the engine running.
Which scanner reads it?
Any OBD2 scanner reads it. If the fix needs a throttle relearn, you'll want a tool with that service function – see What Is a Bidirectional Scan Tool?
Budget tools like the ANCEL AD310 read it; tools with live data and graphing – like the BlueDriver or OBDLink MX+ – help you find the cause. Not sure which fits you? Try the Find My Scanner quiz.
In the data
Of the vehicle complaints owners filed with NHTSA from 2015 to 2025, 12 quote P0507 – most often from Nissan, Ford, Chrysler owners. Complaints lean toward serious problems, so treat this as a sign of how often the code turns up in real reports, not how often cars get it.
