P0087 Fuel Rail/System Pressure – Too Low
The pressure in the fuel rail that feeds the injectors is lower than the engine computer wants.
Common causes
- Weak or failing fuel pump
- Clogged fuel filter or strainer
- Faulty fuel pressure sensor
- On direct-injection engines, a worn high-pressure pump
- Running very low on fuel
Symptoms
- Hesitation or stumbling when accelerating
- Loss of power
- Hard starting
- Stalling
Can I drive with it?
Drive gently and get it checked soon. Low fuel pressure can cause stalling, sometimes when you least want it.
Tip: Rule out the easy one first: if it set while the tank was nearly empty, fill up and clear it to see if it returns.
Which scanner reads it?
Any OBD2 scanner reads it. A tool with live data shows desired and actual fuel rail pressure side by side; bidirectional tools can run the fuel pump test.
Budget tools like the ANCEL AD310 read it; tools with live data and graphing – like the BlueDriver or OBDLink MX+ – help you find the cause. Not sure which fits you? Try the Find My Scanner quiz.
In the data
Of the vehicle complaints owners filed with NHTSA from 2015 to 2025, 140 quote P0087 – most often from Honda, Ford, Volkswagen owners. Complaints lean toward serious problems, so treat this as a sign of how often the code turns up in real reports, not how often cars get it.
