Straight answers about scan tools
ScanToolAdvisor is an independent buyer’s guide for car owners and DIYers choosing an OBD2 scanner – and for the pros who want a quick side-by-side.
Who’s behind this
I’m Scott, a lifelong car enthusiast and a software engineer in Colorado, with 18 years of experience building software and a master’s degree in data science. I started ScanToolAdvisor because comparing scan tools meant wading through jargon-filled listings, and the price on the box rarely told me what a tool would cost to keep using.
So I treat it like any data problem: the same facts collected for every scanner, every source written down, and gaps marked as gaps instead of guessed at. The Trends page takes that further, with analysis of public data like NHTSA’s 700,000+ owner complaints.
What the site does
I compare a short list of popular scanners on the same nine points – price, type, connection, systems covered, active tests, live data, updates, app quality and who each tool suits – and explain what those terms mean in plain English. The buyer’s guides cover the background: how to choose, what the codes mean, and what tools really cost over the years.
How I research and rank
The short version is below; the full details – sources, the nine points, the hands-on test checklist and what we don’t do – are on How We Evaluate.
- Specs, update policies and subscription costs come from each manufacturer’s own pages, checked against retailer listings and published hands-on reviews.
- Prices are shown as ranges, like “$100–$200”, because store prices change almost daily. The Check Price button shows today’s price.
- When a fact is unclear or sources disagree, I say so rather than guess, and keep checking.
- Rankings are my judgment of value for the person each tool suits. No brand can pay for a place on the list.
- When I’ve tested a tool myself, the review will say so.
How the site makes money
Right now, nothing. The “Check Price” buttons are plain links to Amazon and to manufacturers’ sites, and I earn nothing when you use them.
In the future I plan to join the Amazon Associates program, which pays a small commission on purchases made through the site’s links at no extra cost to you. When that happens, this section and the footer will say so, and the commission will never change the rankings.
Corrections
Update policies and features change often. If you spot something out of date or wrong – especially if you make one of these tools – please get in touch and I’ll check it and fix it.
